Medardo Santos Maroto (1943-2010)
Medardo "Medi" Maroto was born on April 24, 1943 in Atimonan, Quezon, Philippines. He graduated from Quezon Memorial High School and then attended Centro Scholar University where he graduated in1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. He immigrated to Canada where he worked at Louise Marshall Hospital in Mt. Forest, Ontario. He then moved to Kingston, Ontario, where he met Rosario Soriano Lopez at Kingston Memorial Hospital, Ontario where they worked together. Medi and Rose got married on June 28, 1969 in London, Ontario. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Detroit, Michigan and eventually to Madison Heights where they raised their two children, Medardo, Jr. (Derek) & Emily Rose. Derek, now an Orthopedic Surgeon in Dallas, Texas, is married to Melisa, a Trauma physician and they have a daughter, Emilia Grace. Emily Rose, married Roberto Ty, Jr. a graphic designer, who works as the creative director at Futuramic Media in Warren, MI.
Medi worked as a Medical Technologist in several small hospitals in Detroit before he settled at the DMC (Detroit Medical Center) Harper Hospital where he retired in 2006 after 30 years of service. He still worked on Contingent status at the MIOSH (now DMC Surgery Hospital) in Madison Heights until he passed away on December 3, 2010. Medi was a gregarious person and led a very active social life. His favorite activity (besides good food, jokes, and great television) was to golf. He could be found out on the greens with his golf buddies in just about any weather condition. Medi was active with various organizations. He has been a member of the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) since 2001 and more than once served as a Board Member. Since the early 80's he was actively involved with the Kiwanis Club of Metro North Troy and also served as Board Member.
